Dakota Johnson and Chris Martin have are understood to have ended their relationship after nearly eight years together, according to multiple sources.
The 35-year-old actress and 48-year-old Coldplay frontman, who became engaged several years ago, have gone their separate ways after starting their romance in 2017.
A source stated the split “feels final this time,” People reports, and others confirmed the relationship “has been over for a long time, they just haven’t been able to figure out how to make it official.”
The couple were last seen together publicly in May, with Johnson recently spotted without her engagement ring whilst out with Martin’s ex-girlfriend Jennifer Lawrence on Sunday.
The insider revealed to MailOnline that “Dakota held a flame for them to be together because she loved him so much and loved his kids so much.”
According to the source, the couple experienced a pattern of breaking up and reconciling over time.
“Breakups aren’t instant and they continued to breakup and makeup and sometimes things would work when they were away from each other, while they were working because absence makes the heart grow fonder, but then they’d get back together and little things just kept adding up to where they weren’t right for each other anymore,” the source explained.
Johnson is reportedly “devastated that she isn’t going to be around his kids as much anymore, but wants them to know that she is always there for them.”
The pair first sparked dating rumours when they were spotted at a sushi restaurant in Los Angeles in October 2017, where they appeared “cozy, laughing and affectionate.”
Johnson was seen at a Coldplay concert in Buenos Aires the following month, with their first public appearance together coming at Stella McCartney’s Autumn 2018 Collection show in LA.
Martin had previously split from actress Gwyneth Paltrow in March 2014 after ten years of marriage, with the former couple sharing children Apple, 21, and Moses, 19.
The ex-spouses famously described their separation as a “conscious uncoupling.”
Johnson developed a close relationship with Martin’s children, stating in a 2024 interview: “I love those kids like my life depends on it. With all my heart.”
The couple’s relationship has weathered previous split rumours, including a brief separation in 2019 reportedly over Martin wanting children, though they quickly reconciled.
Last August, breakup speculation resurfaced but Johnson’s representative dismissed it, confirming they were “happily together.”
Johnson appeared to allude to the split in a recent Los Angeles Times interview about her new film The Materialists.
When discussing her character, she reflected: “Everyone being confused about what the f**k they’re supposed to do with their hearts and what’s the right move. I found that very honest, and I found it just so relatable.”
She added: “For a long time we’ve all been so quick to judge relationships or how they should happen, how they should exist in the world.
